'Feast of Rocks' Exhibit on Display at the Cave Creek Museum
The Food Rocks are back! This popular exhibit from the former Mining and Mineral Museum featured a table full of mouth-watering delights - all made of rocks and minerals. The collection was donated to the AMMM by Margaret and Arless Nixon in the 1990s and was featured at the museum until it closed in 2011. A smaller version of the display has been housed at the AZ Heritage Center in Tempe for the last few years, and now starting in October 2021, the full exhibit will be showcased at the Cave Creek Museum. The Meal of Rocks setup includes a Thanksgiving-themed dinner complete with entrees, sides, drinks and desserts.
The Cave Creek Museum (CCM) is located at 6140 E. Skyline Drive in Cave Creek, northeast of Phoenix. The museum has recently undergone several exciting exhibit updates and building improvements, and will be opening for the 2021/2022 season on October 1. They will be holding a special preview of the museum, including this exhibit, for Smithsonian Museum Day ticketholders on September 18th (more details at the Smithsonian website here). Other exhibits at the CCM highlight the area's indigenous history, mining history, changes throughout the 20th century, and flora and fauna. Notably, the CCM grounds house a fully operational stamp mill - the Golden Reef Stamp Mill - run regularly by their own group of dedicated volunteers (many who lend a helping hand here at the AMMNRE Museum as well). Check out the Cave Creek Museum's website for more info including hours of operation and admission.
Below enjoy some photos of this fun exhibit. The CCM staff hopes to see you sometime this season!
